Harrisonburg, Va.— The John Jay College of Criminal Justice opened its 2009-10 women's basketball season with a loss as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC) 93-52 on day one of the Eastern Mennonite tip-off tournament hosted by Eastern Mennonite College.
John Jay, 0-1, was led in scoring by
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) who led all scorers with 24 points. She was 9-for-25 from the floor and 6-for-11 from the free throw line. Fellow teammates
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas),
Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) and
Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) added eight points each in the contest, while Smith grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and Lirio had 11.
The Bloodhounds led twice very early in the contest. They led 2-0 and 6-5 before VWC spurted out a 9-1 run to take a 14-7 lead and the Marlins never trailed again.
John Jay got back to within three and trailed 14-11 after capping off a 5-0 run after a Grice jumper in the paint with 11:51 to play.
But VWC used a 22-2 run midway through the first half to take a 36-13 lead with 6:46 to play and take control of the game.
VWC led by as much as 30 in the first half before going into halftime up 53-24.
The Marlins opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 62-26 lead with just over two minutes gone by.
VWC gradually pulled away in the second half and led by as many as 44 in the latter stages of the contest before claiming the 41 point win.
VWC's
Kristina Jameson led the Marlins with 18 points.
The Bloodhounds committed 35 turnovers in the contest.
John Jay returns to action on Saturday for day two of the tournament. The Bloodhounds will face Eastern Mennonite College at 4 p.m.
