Four Men's Tennis Players Recognized by CUNYAC
Pagan, Shao, Smith, Chung
New York, N.Y.— The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) has announced its All-Stars for the 2009 men’s tennis season and a trio of John Jay team members were named to the team, as Josh Pagan (Douglaston, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) was named to the first team, while fellow teammates Dong Shao (Flushing, NY, Patchogue-Medford)and Tim Smith (Poughkeepsie, NY, Our Lady of Lourdes) were named to the second team. Meanwhile, Derrick Chung (San Diego, CA, Rancho Buena Vista) was named as an honorable mention.

Pagan makes the first team after an incredible year with the Bloodhounds. Playing No. 2 singles all season long, Pagan was undefeated in singles play going 10-0 overall, including 6-0 against fellow CUNYAC opponents. Eight of his 10 singles wins came in straight sets. As a doubles competitor, the Nassau Community College transfer went 8-4, including 5-2 in CUNYAC regular season play. He was recently named the 2008-09 John Jay Male Athlete of the Year.

Shao, the reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, picked up where he left off last season. He played No. 1 singles all season long and finished 10-3 overall. Nine of his 10 wins were straight sets. As a doubles competitor he went 11-4.

Smith, a first year team member, had an incredible year while playing No. 6 singles for most of the season. He was 8-4 overall and won his last five matches, four of which were in two straight sets. Against CUNYAC foes, he was 5-2 during the regular season. In doubles, Smith earned six wins.

Chung was equally as spectacular for the Bloodhounds in 2009. After starting off the season 1-3, he won seven of his last eight singles matches to go 8-4 overall. In doubles play, Chung was 11-4.

The John Jay men’s tennis team finished the season 10-5 overall and advanced into the semifinal round of the 2009 CUNYAC men’s tennis championship.
