Men's Basketball Falls to King's College

Wilkes-Barre, Pa.— The John Jay men's basketball team opened its 2010 calendar year with a loss as the Bloodhounds were defeated by King's College 100-64 in the opening round of the 2010 Ramada Inn Wilkes-Barre Challenge hosted by King's College.

John Jay, 1-10 overall, had four players score in double figures and were led by Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) and Isaiah Holman (New York, NY, Manhattan Center) with a team co-high 13 points. Fellow teammate Joseph Padell (Staten Island, NY, Tottenville) added 12, while Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica)scored 11 in the contest. Mason grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The host Monarchs scored the first seven points in the contest and never trailed. King's gradually increased the lead in the early stages of the first half and led by as much as 24. The Monarchs led 32-8 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

King's held a comfortable lead for most of the remainder of the first half, until John Jay cut into the margin late.

The Bloodhounds trailed 44-25 with 2:51 remaining before closing out the first half on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 12 as John Jay went into halftime down 44-32.

King's shot 68 percent from the field in the first half, including 71 percent from three point range.

John Jay scored the first two points of the second half to cap a 9-0 overall run. But King's outscored the Bloodhounds 21-4 over the first six minutes of the half, including a 17-0 spurt to cap a big run as King's took a 65-37 lead with 14:13 to play.

The Monarchs held the Bloodhounds at bay the rest of the way, never leading by less than 20, en route to the decision.

John Jay is back in action on Sunday against Wilkes University at 1 p.m. in day two of the tournament.
