Atlanta, Ga.— John Jay College of Criminal Justice director of athletics,
Dan Palumbo was on hand at the NCAA Convention last week and was congratulated in front of a large audience of Division III athletics directors from over all 50 states as the John Jay athletics department was recognized publicly by the NCAA for overall excellence in diversity.
John Jay was just one of nine institutions of the 450 at the Division III level to be recognized for the commendable honor.
Palumbo accepted the plaque at the Division III Business Session at the convention which was held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.
The study was conducted by the independent Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University, and was supported by the NCAA. Founded in 2003 as part of the Center for Sport Management Research and Education, the Lab is dedicated to producing and disseminating research related to all forms of diversity within the sport and leisure context.
Through the research conducted by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport, the overall excellence in diversity award winners are those that have achieved the highest combined scores in the areas of diversity strategy, gender equity compliance (Title IX Proportionality), value and attitudinal diversity of department employees, gender diversity of department employees, and racial diversity of department employees.
“It is a great feeling to be recognized as a department with such a diverse team working toward a common goal,” said Palumbo. “And to be recognized and congratulated in front of fellow colleagues for having a diverse department puts the College is great light.”
