Vaughn Mason

Box Score

Bronx, N.Y.— John Jay senior guard Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) had his first career 20-20 game as he knocked in 20 points and grabbed a career-high 23 rebounds, but not quite enough for the Bloodhounds as the John Jay men’s basketball team was defeated on the road by Lehaman College 71-59 at the Apex Arena.

With the loss, John Jay is now 1-20 (1-9 CUNYAC) on the season and the Bloodhounds’ current losing streak is at 15 games.

Besides Mason, three John Jay players scored in double figures including Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) with 16 as well as Ryan Olsen (Huntington, NY, St. John the Baptist) and Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica) with 10 a piece. Desir also grabbed 12 rebounds in the contest.

Lehman College outscored the Bloodhounds 1-0 in points off the bench as the games 10 starters combined for 129 of the game’s 130 points. The Lightning was led by Xavier Garvin and Perry Daniel with 22 points each.

The first half saw five lead changes and two ties. And with the game going back and fourth in the early stages of the opening stanza, the host Lightning took a 10-point lead and led 22-12 capping an 8-0 run with 12:36 remaining.

But John Jay outscored Lehman 17-6 over the next eight plus minutes to retake the lead and the Bloodhounds led 28-27.

The Lightning then responded with an 8-0 run to go back up by seven and Lehman had a 35-28 lead with 1:40 to go before leading 37-33 at halftime.

John Jay kept the contest close in the second half despite never owning a lead. After falling behind by seven to start the stanza, the Bloodhounds went on a 7-0 run to tie the contest at 40-40 with 16:02 to go capped on a lay-up by Olsen, who ignited the run with a three point field goal.

Lehman answered each time and would lead by a small margin. The Lightning, up 43-42, went on a 7-0 to go back up by eight as the Lightning were ahead 50-42 with 11:10 left.

The Bloodhounds pulled to within two twice more, most recently at the 6:39 mark when they trailed 53-51. But a 4-0 spurt by Lehman gave the Lightning a six point cushion.

John Jay was still down by four with 3:14 left when they trailed 61-57. But Lehman closed out the contest outscoring John Jay 10-2 over the final three plus minutes, including 8-0 over the last 1:59 to take their biggest lead of the night before the contest ended.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Feb. 5 for a home contest against the City College of New York at 7 p.m.
