New York, N.Y.— The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) announced its weekly award winner on Monday evening and softball player
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Girls) was named the softball Player of the Week, while baseball player
Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys) was named baseball's Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 11.
Bonici had a superb week which saw the Bloodhounds win four conference games and up their win total to nine as they currently stand at 9-7 overall this season.
The senior shortstop batted .517 (15-for-29), with five doubles, 10 runs and 12 RBI in 10 games, including a .625 batting average in games against conference teams.
She started the week by going 1-for-1 with a run in the first game of a doubleheader against Baruch College. In game two, Bonici was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. In a doubleheader against York last Thursday, she had two doubles, four runs and three RBI. The next day in a doubleheader against Brooklyn College, Bonici was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in game one, before a 3-for-4 performance with a double, two runs and four RBI.
The captain then closed out the week by going a combined 5-for-8, three RBI performance in a doubleheader at Lehman College.
So far this season, Bonici is batting .478 with six doubles, a triple and 18 RBI. She is a career .414 hitter with 18 doubles, eight triples, six homeruns, 92 runs and 97 RBI.
Catalano garners CUNYAC's top rookie award for the second time this season after winning for the first time on March 22.
Last week, Catalano batted .450 (9-for-20) with three runs, two triples and an RBI in five games.
He was 3-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI against Manhattanville on Apr. 6. Against the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Apr. 8 he had a double and a run. He was then a combined 5-for-11 in three games against the College of Staten Island over the weekend.
To date, Catalano is batting .340 (34-for-100) with 21 runs, six doubles, a triple and eight RBI.
