New York, N.Y.— The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) has announced that John Jay College freshman men's soccer player
Edward Gonzalez (Bayside, FL, Bayside) has been named the conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 6.
Gonzalez had a memorable first week of NCAA Division III soccer. The speedy striker had at least one goal in each of John Jay's first three games of the season.
He scored John Jay's first goal of the season in a season opening match at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) representative Kean University on Sept. 1. He followed that up with another goal during the Bloodhounds' 4-1 win at SUNY Purchase on Friday. Then on Monday afternoon, Gonzalez closed out the week by scoring all of John Jay's goals, including the game winner in the ninety-fourth minute, in a 3-2 Bloodhounds win over SUNY Maritime at the Metropolitan Oval.
“As a team we played well together, just like we have been doing in practice,” Gonzalez said after Monday's win. “I love just being on the field, I'm doing what makes me happy and I am ready for us to have a great season.”
So far this season, Gonzalez's five goals leads CUNYAC in goals with five and shots with 17. He is second in the conference in points with 10.
John Jay men's soccer returns to action on Sat. Sept. 11 for a match against the College of Mount Saint Mary at noon at the Metropolitan Oval.
