Port Charlotte, Fla.— The John Jay baseball team lost a pair of games on Saturday evening as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Medaille College in a doubleheader at the Snowbird Classic. John Jay lost the first game 15-4 before falling 7-0 in the nightcap.
In the first game, John Jay established a three run lead by getting three across in the top of the first.
Benjamin Beiro (Bronx, NY, Wesley Chapel), who was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBI, laced a single through the right side to score
Nick Catalano (Staten Island, NY, St. Peter's Boys)for the first run of the contest.
Moments later
Xavier Perez (Bronx, NY, Manhattan Center) scored from third on a wild pitch. And the Bloodhounds got a third run on a single to right by
Wilmer Chavez (Corona, NY, Queens Vocational) that scored Beiro.
Medaille got a run back in the first, but scored 10 in the second inning to take an 11-4 lead after two innings.
John Jay surrendered eight walks and two hit batsmen for a total of 10 free pases, nine of which came in the first 1.1 innings.
The Mavericks scored seven runs before recording their first hit of the game.
John Jay scored another run in the third inning on a double by Beiro which scored Perez, who led off the inning with a triple.
But Medaille scored three more in the fourth and another in the sixth to maintain the lead and win.
Dan Barrancotta and
Jeffrey Cox led Medaille with three hits each.
Alex Rodriguez (Bronx, NY, Adlai E. Stevenson) went 1.1 innings and allowed nine runs (eight earned) on no hits with seven walks and two hit batsmen.
In the second game, Medaille scored three runs in the top of the first and the Mavericks limited John Jay to four hits en route to the shutout.
Xavier Perez was 2-for-3, while Chavez and
Dennis Lopez (Selden, NY, Newfield) had a hit each.
Danny LoPresti (Brooklyn, NY, Abraham Lincoln) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned). Brian Vital fanned eight Bloodhounds en route to the shutout.
Seven Medaille players had one hit each in the second game, while
Matthew Urbanski and
Jeffrey Kasprzyk had a pair of RBI.
John Jay will wrap up their 2010 Florida trip on Sunday with a game against Bluffton University at 9 a.m.
