Grantham, Pa.— The John Jay women's basketball team opened its 2011-12 season with a loss at Messiah College 77-38 in the opening round of the Hampton Inn Tip-off Classic.
With the loss, the Bloodhounds will now play in the consolation game of the tournament at 2 p.m. against Farmingdale State who lost to St. Vincent College in the tournament's other game.
In Friday's lost, the Bloodhounds were led by
Jamecia Forsythe with 11 points as she was the only member of the Bloodhound to score in double figures. Forsythe also contributed a team-high eight rebounds in the contest. Fellow teammates
Elizabeth Newton and
Aneska Tejada had eight points each in the loss.
The host Falcons opened the game on a 14-0 run to set the tempo as Messiah led from start to finish. Messiah led by as much as 22 in the first half before going into halftime up by 20 (40-20).
Messiah gradually pulled away in the second half en route to the thirty-nine point win.
The Falcons were led by Nicky Hess with 19 points, while Dori Gyori had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
