Port Charlotte, Fla.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated on Sunday morning as the Bloodhounds lost to Bluffton College 18-7 in John Jay's final game of the Snowbird Classic at Charlotte High School.
With the loss, John Jay's southern trip ends with an 0-7 record as the Bloodhounds return north for the remainder of their 2011 schedule.
In Sunday morning's loss, the Bloodhounds were led by Cosme Munez, with three hits as he was 3-for-4.
Steven Caracena and
Wilmer Chavez were 2-for-5 each. Chavez had three RBI and a homerun, John Jay's only long ball of the trip.
Bluffton took the early lead with a run in the top of the first, before the Bloodhounds capitalized with two in the bottom half.
Dennis Lopez led off the frame by reaching on an error and scored moments later on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Chavez blasted a solo shot to left field to put the Bloodhounds up.
But the Beavers scored at least one run in each of the first five innings, including five in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth to go up 15-3 after five innings. John Jay's only run in the meantime came on a
Bobby Villante single that scored Munoz in the fourth.
The Bloodhounds were down 17-3 before putting up four runs in the bottom of the eighth. The inning was capped by a two run single by Chavez that scored Lopez and William Moran.
John Jay then left the bases loaded in the ninth inning as the game ended.
Steven Caracena suffered the loss after going 4 1/3 innings.
Ronald Barillas pitched 4 2/3 of solid relief allowing three runs on three hits.
Bluffton was led by Nick Broyles who was 2-for-3 with two triples, two runs and three RBI.
