Kamal Haruna is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Bloodhounds. He is the second head coach of the women’s soccer program’s history and the first since John Jay added back women’s soccer to its list of sports in 2010 after a five year hiatus.
Under Haruna’s guidance, the program has already earned elite status amongst the City University of New York Athletic Conference. Through the first two season, John Jay has made the conference playoffs both times, and went to the CUNYAC women’s soccer championship in 2011 where the Bloodhounds tied the College of Staten Island.
Also, under Haruna, John Jay women’s soccer has had seven players earn CUNYAC All-Star awards, including a Rookie of the Year and two CUNYAC Sportsmanship awards. On top of that, Haruna was named CUNYAC’s 2011 women’s soccer Coach of the Year.
Prior to coaching the women’s soccer team, Haruna, a 2008 graduate of John Jay, served as assistant coach for the men’s program during the 2009 season. Prior to that, Haruna played two seasons (2006-07) on the men’s roster and played a critical role in their run to the 2006 CUNYAC championship game.
A native of Accra, Ghana, Haruna is a 2004 graduate of Martin Luther King High School in New York City where he was a member of the Knights boy’s soccer program for four seasons, which included a Public School Athletic League (PSAL) championship each season.
Upon graduating from high school, Haruna attended Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. and was a member of the men’s soccer team for one season before transferring.
In addition to his duties as coach, Haruna is an adjunct professor at John Jay College and works as a supervisor in its fitness center.
His coaching experience includes having worked for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation where coached children between 5 and 12 years old.
Haruna resides in the Bronx, N.Y.
