***ALL ATHLETIC INJURIES AND ILLNESS MUST BE REPORTED TO THE ATHLETIC TRAINING STAFF***

Athletic Trainers are certified and licensed allied healthcare professionals who work under the direction of a licensed physician to provide health care to athletes and active individuals.

Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are responsible for implementing injury prevention strategies, providing immediate care and first aid during practices and competitions, evaluation and diagnosis of sport-related injuries; injury rehabilitation and treatment; and organization and administration of the school's sports medicine program, which includes maintaing medical records, acting as a liaison between the student-athlete and the insurance provider, and communication with the team physician, among many other duties.

The Athletic Training staff consists of the head athletic trainer, per diem athletic trainers, orthopedic doctors, and all college health professionals.

It is the goal of the Athletic Trainer to protect each athlete from bodily harm and injury during intercollegiate athletic participation. If and when an injury/illness occurs because of the inherent factors of sport participation, the prevention of re-injury is of utmost importance. Within the realm of good medical judgment, we will help the coaching staff and student-athletes achieve their goals for athletic success in whatever way we possibly can.

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice Department of Athletics is committed to providing high-quality medical care to every student-athlete. On-site medical services provided include but are not limited to injury prevention; evaluation and treatment of injuries and illnesses; rehabilitation services; nutritional and psychological counseling, and drug and supplement education.

All John Jay College student-athletes are required to have their own primary insurance coverage. If you do not have your own insurance, you can visit the websites for HealthFirst or MetroPlus to apply for free or low-cost insurance.  Individuals who do not provide proof of coverage will not be permitted to try out for a team.

In order to participate in intercollegiate athletic practices, tryouts, or competitions, all student-athletes must be issued a medical clearance by the head athletic trainer.
