The 2013-2014 softball season will be Danielle Bonici’s second year as head coach for the softball team. Though a second year head coach, Bonici is no stranger to John Jay athletics. She served as assistant coach of the team during the 2011 season, and prior to that was a four year standout as a student-athlete on the Bloodhounds from 2007-’10. In addition, Bonici currently serves as the part time Assistant Sports Information Director for John Jay Athletics.
In her playing career, Bonici, a shortstop, amassed a .404 batting average while playing in 116 games. She had 137 hits, including 19 doubles, nine triples, six homeruns and 101 runs batted in. She accumulated 192 total bases and had a .566 slugging percentage. Team captain for three years, she was named a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) first team All-Star during her freshman, sophomore and juniors years, and was named a second team All-Star during her senior year despite missing a chunk of games due to injury.
In her years as a student-athlete, Bonici, a Staten Island, N.Y. native, served as president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and organized an annual toy drive with her teammates during the holiday season each year. The Staten Island native was also awarded the Hospital for Special Surgery CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the month of March in 2010. A scholar, she graduated with honors and earned the prestigious Herbert Erlanger, M.D. wellness award at graduation which is given to one John Jay student-athlete each year who exemplified wellness during his or her career at John Jay.
