Tony Phillips is in his 13th season as head coach of the men's and women's cross country teams. In addition, he serves as the Manager of the Cardiovascular Fitness Center.

Since taking over the program in 2006, Phillips has brought the Bloodhounds cross country programs to unchartered waters. He has already guided the men’s cross country program to back to back City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) championships (2006 and 2007), and has rapidly improved the women’s program who finished second in 2007, its best finish in several years.

In 2006, Phillips took the men’s team from a fourth place CUNYAC finish the year before taking over, to winning by two points in the conference championship meet, the closest margin of victory in conference championship meet history at the time. In 2007 he guided the men’s team to three invitational wins during the regular season before recapturing gold in the CUNYAC’s signature race, while his top runner was named the CUNYAC Men’s Cross Country Most Valuable Player.

Phillips’ success as coach has allowed him to twice be recognized by his fellow CUNYAC cross country coaches. He was named the conference men’s cross country Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2007.

Though just in his ninth season, Phillips is no stranger to John Jay athletics. He is a 1988 graduate of the institution with a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice. He also received a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the same institution.

He has been employed by his alma mater for more than 25 years serving in various capacities. Currently, he is serving as the supervisor of the Cardiovascular Fitness Center. He is also the assistant SAAC Coordinator for the Athletics Department. Another position he has held includes Facilities Manager and Events Manager.

Phillips currently resides in his native hometown of the Bronx, N.Y.
