Women's Swimming and Diving Opens Season with Win at Lehman

Bronx, N.Y. - The 2006-07 edition of the women's swimming and diving team at John Jay College got off to a winning start as the Bloodhounds defeated Lehman College 108-83 at Lehman's Apex on Friday evening.

John Jay claimed first place in seven different races to improve to 1-0 on the season.

Lorraine Virgilio (Wooside, NY/ Riverbend) scored a first place victory in the 1000 free (16:12), while Sasha Martell (Astoria, NY/ Long Island City) scored a victory in the 200 individual medly (3:12:42).

Freshman Kelly Calderon (Bronx, NY/ St. Catherine's Academy) won all three races she competed in. She won the 100 butterfly (1:26.98), 100 back (1:31.74), and teamed with Martell, Jennifer Villa (Bronx, NY/ Fashion Industries), and Cyre Irby (Hollis, NY/ Jamaica) to win 200 medly relay (2:54.06) by .03 as the Lehman team came home in 2:54.09.

Senior Katelyn O'Shea (Union, NJ/Union) also won a pair of races. She won the 100 free (1:08.36), before teaming with Martell, Madelline Zaiter (Bronx, NY/ DeWitt-Clinton), and Michelle Cordero (Brooklyn, NY/ Fontbonne Hall Academy) to win the 200 free relay (2:55.20).

The Bloodhounds will return to action on Tue. Nov. 7 for their home opener against the College of St. Elizabeth's at 6:30 p.m.
