New York, N.Y.-- The John Jay women's basketball team rallied back from a 16-point deficit in the second half, but fell in overtime to Baruch College 84-76 at Baruch College on Tuesday night.
The loss drops John Jay to 4-4 (0-1 CUNYAC), while Baruch is now 4-3 (1-0 CUNYAC).
Lashannen Hogue (Yonkers, NY/ Roosevelt) led the Bloodhounds with a season-high 28 points and 15 rebounds. She shot 11-for-17 from the field, and recorded a team-high three steals.
Fellow teammate Nasira Johnson (Newark, NJ/ West Side) played the entire game (45 minutes) and chipped in with 20 points and six assists in the contest.
John Jay took the lead early in the contest, and led by as much as 12 (15-3) midway through the first half.
But Baruch went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to five (15-10). The host Bearcats would chip away at the lead and eventually take the lead (22-21) with just over two minutes remaining.
The Bloodhounds had an answer and went on a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead, and led by five. But Baruch narrowed the margin to one right before halftime as the Bloodhounds held onto a one point lead (27-26) at the break.
John Jay went back up by three to start the second half on a jumper by Johnson. But Baruch went on an 8-0 run to take a five point lead and never trailed again in regulation.
The Bloodhounds got the deficit to as low as two early in the second half. But with Baruch up by two (38-36) with 12:43 to play, the Bearcats went on an 18-4 run to take a 16 point lead (56-40) with just over 10 minutes to play.
But John Jay answered the call and went on a 13-2 run, which included a pair of three point field goals by Melissa Escalera (Bronx, NY/ Adali E Stevenson), to narrow the deficit to five (58-53) with just under six minutes remaining.
Baruch would answer and reestablish a double-digit lead (66-55) with just under four minutes remaining.
But John Jay went to work and ended the half on a 13-2 run. The rally started when Johnson was fouled in the act of shooting with 3:49 to go. Baruch was then called for a technical foul on the play, and Johnson would drill all four free throws to get the lead down to seven.
A lay-up by Hogue would narrow the margin to five, followed by a pair of Johnson free throws to get the deficit to three with 2:28 to play.
After Baruch went back up by five, Hogue put up a lay-up that rimmed out. But Baruch failed to put the game away and turned the ball over. John Jay then capitalized on a baseline jumer by Michelle Wallace (Flushing, NY/ Robert F Kennedy) with :57 remaining.
After Baruch turned the ball over again the Bloodhounds would tie the game in the closing seconds on a three-point field goal by Mahogany Payne (Columbia, SC/ Columbia) to send the game into overtime.
In the extra session the Bearcats opened up with a 5-0 run to take a 73-68 lead. But John Jay answer back with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 74-73 lead on a jumper by Ganimete Ukperaj (Bellmore, NY/ John F Kennedy) with 2:42 to play.
But Baruch closed out the extra session on an 11-2 run over the final 1:49 to claim the game.
John Jay will return to action on Thu. Dec. 7 at Hunter College at 7 p.m.
