Bloodhounds Coast Past Brooklyn

New York, NY – Melissa Escalera (Bronx, NY/ Adali E Stevenson) knocked in 22 points to go along with 12 rebounds and five blocks to lead a balanced attack as the Bloodhounds defeated Brooklyn College 72-45 at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.
 
Fellow teammate Sha-kia Hart (Brooklyn, NY/ Graham School) added 15 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks, while Nasira Johnson (Newark, NJ/ West Side) and Janise Higgins (Cambria Heights, NY/ Christ the King) chipped in with 12 a piece in the win. Johnson also contributed with a season-high nine rebounds and six assists for John Jay, while Michelle Wallace (Flushing, NY/ Robert F Kennedy) added 10 points in the win.
 
The Bloodhounds led most of the contest en route to win. After Brooklyn took a brief lead early in the first half, John Jay used a 15-2 run to take an 11-10 deficit and transform it into a 26-13 and the Bloodhounds would never trail again.
 
But Brooklyn would answer back and went on an 8-0 run to narrow the deficit to five (26-21) with 2:31 to play. After John Jay went back up by seven, Brooklyn would get back to within five (28-23) with 1:37 to play. But the Bloodhounds closed out the first half on a 7-0 run to go up 35-23.
 
The Bloodhounds never led by less than double-figures in the second half as they gradually pulled away for the 27 point win.
 
With the win John Jay is now 10-5 (4-1 CUNYAC), while Brooklyn is now 3-10 (1-4 CUNYAC).
 
The Bloodhounds dominated the paint area outscoring the Bridges 34-14, and earned 22 points off of 24 Brooklyn turnovers.
 
The Bridges were led by Jaclyn Cavalcante (Brooklyn, NY/ James Madison) who had 14 points and four rebounds, while Christina McDonnell (Staten Island, NY/ Staten Island Tech) chipped in with 13 points in the contest. Jenny Varughese (Staten Island, NY/ Staten Island Tech) had a team-best 10 rebounds for Brooklyn.
 
The Bloodhounds will return to action on Fri. Jan. 12 at Medgar Evers College at 5:30 p.m.
