New York, NY – After scoring a season high 36 in a win over conference foe New York City Tech on Wednesday, senior forward Melissa Escalera (Bronx, NY/ Adali E Stevenson) picked up where she left off as she knocked in a game-high 35 and added a game-high 15 rebounds as the John Jay women’s basketball team defeated York College, 71-49, at the Doghouse on Friday evening.
The win improves John Jay to 13-6 (7-1 CUNYAC), while York is now 1-15 (1-7 CUNYAC).
John Jay led most of the way, and took the lead for good (12-10) on a lay-up by Sha-kia Hart (Brooklyn, NY/ Graham School) with 12:10 remaining.
The lay-up started a 23-0 John Jay run that gave the Bloodhounds a 33-10 lead with 2:38 to play en route to victory.
Hart recorded 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench for John Jay.
The Bloodhounds extended their lead to as much as 24 before halftime on a pair of free throws by Escalera that gave the home team a 39-15 lead at the break.
John Jay led by as much as 32 in the second half before York made a mild run.
Vanessa Rivera (Bronx, NY/ Bronx Leadership), who scored 13 points and dished out seven assists, nailed a jumper with 11:54 to play to give the Bloodhounds a 54-22 lead.
But York, who outscored John Jay 34-32 in the second half, would cut into the lead by outscoring the Bloodhounds 27-17 over the final 10 minutes to narrow the deficit to 22.
York got to within 19 (61-42 with 4:17 remaining), but John Jay went on a 6-0 run to deny any miracle comebacks.
The Lady Cardinals were led by Delores Maeweather (Jamaica, NY/ Campus Magnet) with 18 points, while fellow teammate Desiree Patton (Jamaica, NY/ Martin Van Buren) added 16 points and 14 rebounds for York.
John Jay will return to action on Mon. Jan. 22 against St. Joseph’s-Patchogue, 7 p.m. at the Doghouse.
