New York, N.Y.— It was not as easy some would have suggested but the John Jay women’s basketball team got the job done and picked up the “W” to improve to 15-7 (8-2 CUNYAC) as the Bloodhounds defeated CCNY 49-45 at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Bloodhounds got the first jump in the contest and opened a 13 point lead (23-10) midway though the opening half.
But the host Beavers closed out the half on a 14-4 before halftime to cut the John Jay lead to three (27-24).
In the second half the Beavers opened up with an 8-0 run (22-4 total run) to take their biggest lead of the season (32-27).
But John Jay went on 9-1 run afterwards to reclaim the lead (36-33) with 12:55 to play on a Ganimete Ukperaj (Bellmore, NY/ John F Kennedy) lay-up.
The Bloodhounds would never trail again, but CCNY would not go away. The Beavers would get the lead to within one on a lay-up with 9:31 to go by Angelica Sze (Queens, NY/ Brooklyn Tech), who led CCNY with a team co-high 16 points (8-for-15 shooting).
After the Bloodhounds would go back up the Beavers would answer and cut the deficit to one, most recent as 43-42 with 4:31 to go on another Sze field goal.
But John Jay put together a 6-0 run to take a 49-42 lead with 26 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
John Jay was led by Sha-kia Hart (Brooklyn, NY/ Graham School) with team-highs 11 points, seven rebounds, and seven blocks. Ukperaj added nine in the win, while Janise Higgins (Cambria Heights, NY/ Christ the King) also chipped in with nine.
John Jay will return to action on Fri. Feb. 2 against Lehman College, 5 p.m. at the Doghouse.
