Men's Soccer Plays Hunter College to a 1-1 Tie

Queens, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s soccer team ended its 2007 regular season by playing Hunter College to a 1-1 tie at the Metropolitan Oval on Wednesday evening. The tie ends the Bloodhounds’ regular season record at 6-9-3 (4-2-2 CUNYAC) and sole possession of third place in conference play with 14 points.
 
In what was an evenly played match the host Hawks got on the board first with a goal late in the first half as John Jay trailed 1-0 at halftime.
 
But John Jay struck early in the second half and got a goal from freshman midfielder Oscar Garcia (East Elmhurst, NY / St. John’s Prep) to even the score.
 
Both teams remained deadlocked from their despite numerous chance for both teams to put the match away.
 
Hunter was awarded a penalty kick in the final 10 minutes of regulation after a John Jay foul just inside the penalty area. But the kick was shanked 10 plus yards wide to the right as play resumed.
 
The Bloodhounds nearly took the lead moments later when Garcia set up a breakaway. Controlling the ball from midfield he slipped a pass to Steven Castillo (Maspeth, NY / Forest Hills) on the right wing, but the would be game winner went wide.
 
In the second overtime the Bloodhounds once again came within inches of ending it when sophomore defenseman Raymond Sanicola (East Meadow, NY / St. Anthony’s) sent a free kick toward the net but ricocheted off the cross bar.
 
John Jay recorded 18 shots in the match, 12 of which were on goal. Garcia nailed a team-high six shots, five on goal, and goalkeeper Edwin Casas (Bogota, Colombia / South Side) caught a career-high 17 saves for the Bloodhounds.
 
After earning the No. 3 seed the Bloodhounds will host No.6 seed New York City Tech on Sat. Oct. 27 at a time to be announced in a rematch of October 13th’s heartbreaking defeat.
