Box Score Queens, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s soccer team was the beneficiary of an own goal late in the second half to break a 2-2 tie as the Bloodhounds got back in the win column with a 3-2 win over Medgar Evers College at the Metropolitan Oval on Saturday.
The win improves John Jay to 6-7-1 (4-1-1 CUNYAC), while Medgar Evers is now 5-8-0 (3-2-0).
For the second consecutive match the Bloodhounds got on the scoreboard first in the same style, a first half penalty shot by Hiromi Karahashi (Kanagawa, Japan / St. Johnsburg). The junior defender recorded his team-leading sixth strike of the season at the 15:43 mark to give the Bloodhounds a 1-0 advantage,
John Jay increased its lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute on a strike by Andres Llanos () from inside the near sideline and landed to the left of the outstretched Cougar goalkeeper John Ajirotutu (). Christopher Tapia (Fresh Meadows, NY / Central Islip) and Daniel Vargas (Corona, NY / Arts and Business) got touches on the strike as John Jay took control of the contest for the moment.
Medgar Evers got a goal late in the first half to cut its deficit in half. Tito Thorpe (Brooklyn, NY / Brooklyn Comp) got control of the ball after a pass inside was deflected by the Bloodhounds. And from the far sideline he nailed the kick to the left of John Jay goalkeeper Edwin Casas (Bogota, Colombia / South Side) whose diving attempt to knock it away was just out of reach.
The Cougars evened the score in the 77th minute of action as Ancil Porter-Lee (Brooklyn, NY / Pre College) nailed a penalty kick of his own lower 90 left.
But the Bloodhounds got the lead moments later on a Medgar Evers mistake in its defensive zone in the 82nd minute.
Tapia attempted a cross pass to Llanos, but the ball was deflected by a Medgar Evers defender who booted it backward. The ball landed over the crease before Ajirotutu could get into position to stop the ball as John Jay reclaimed the lead and go on to victory.
The Bloodhounds got three saves from Casas.
John Jay returns to action on Wed, Oct. 10 at Centenary College at 4 p.m.
