New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s swimming team lost for the first time at home this season as the Bloodhounds fell to SUNY Purchase, 55-38, in a duel meet at the John Jay Pool on Tuesday evening.
The visiting Panthers led from start to finish, claiming first place in the first seven events before swimming as exhibition.
The Bloodhounds scored second place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle as Rachael Spellman (East Meadow, NY / East Meadow) earned the place spot (30.27).
In the 100 yard butterfly the Bloodhounds earned second and third place finishes as Samantha Michaele (Somerset, NJ / Immaculata) came home in second (1:33.06), while Deandra Beach (Brooklyn, NY / South Shore) finished third (1:59.46).
John Jay also landed a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke as Kelly Calderon (Bronx, NY / St. Catherine Academy) finished in the runner up spot (1:29.33)
The Bloodhounds then scored 23 points over the final three events. Amanda Garcia (Astoria, NY / St. John’s Prep) was the first scorer to place in the 500 yard freestyle (7:39.75). In the 100 yard breaststroke Cecelia Pena (Brooklyn, NY / Bushwick) scored first place (1:43.22).
In the free relay, the team of Heather Vobis (Lindenhurst, NY / Lindenhurst), Mallory Simons (Elmira, NY / Southside), Pena, and Garcia scored first place points (1:57.93) to cap off the event.
Three members of the Bloodhounds: Garcia, Stewart, and Spellman, will compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship meet on Sun. Dec. 2 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Bloodhounds return to action on Wed. Dec. 5 for a home meet against Hunter College at 6 p.m.
