New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women’s swimming team lost its final home meet of the 2007-08 season as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), 67-40, at John Jay Pool on Tuesday evening. The Bloodhounds now stand at 3-4 (2-2 CUNYAC) on the season.
The visiting Mariners led from the opening race and led 23-2 after the first three races. But the Bloodhounds earned back-to-back second place finishes. John Jay finished second and third in the 50 yard free style as Rachael Spellman (East Meadow, NY / East Meadow) finished second (30:74), and Ashley Stewart (Lacey Township, NJ / Lacey Township) finished right behind (30:75).
John Jay scored another second place finish as Michelle Cordero (Brooklyn, NY / Fontbonne Hall Academy) finished in the runner up spot of the 200 yard individual medley (3:17.43) as John Jay trailed 34-9 after five events.
After turning to exhibition for select swimmers over the coming events, John Jay swam second and third in the 100 yard butterfly. Samantha Michaele (Somerset, NJ / Immaculata) was second (1:37.20), while Deandra Beach (Brooklyn, NY / South Shore) was third (2:17.56).
The Bloodhounds also got a two-three finish in the 100 yard freestyle when Cecelia Pena (Brooklyn, NY / Bushwick) came home in second (1:15.63), while Dena Mohammed (Brooklyn, NY / Fort Hamilton) was third (1:35.78).
John Jay also got a two-three ending in the 100 yard back with Mallory Simons (Elmira, NY / South Side) second (1:28.89) and Kelly Calderon (Bronx, NY / St. Catherine Academy) third (1:29.07).
The Bloodhounds scored one more two-three, this time in the 500 yard freestyle. Amanda Garcia (Astoria, NY / St. John’s Prep) recorded a second place showing (7:45.96) and Cordero came home in third (8:03.78).
Despite winning by default due to the USMMA swimming the remainder as exhibition, the Bloodhounds earned two wins outright as Stewart won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:24.77), then in the final event of the evening the relay team of Cordero, Simons, Spellman, and Garcia took gold in the 200 free (2:09.11).
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Jan. 17 at Baruch College at 6 p.m.
