New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team lost at home on Thursday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Pitt-Greensburg, 90-55, at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds are now 2-9 (0-2 CUNYAC) as the 2007 portion of the 2007-08 schedule is complete.
The visiting Bobcats raced out of the gate on a 13-0 run less than three minutes into the contest and led from start to finish. Pitt-Greensburg made its first five field goals, four of which were lay-ups, including three fast breaks to take control.
But John Jay went on a 9-3 run to get within seven points of the lead, capped by a jumper by Janina Jurewicz-Johnson (New York, NY / Beacon School) who contributed with six points and four rebounds.
The Bloodhounds would get no closer as the Bobcats gradually pulled away and outscored the Bloodhounds 17-4 over the final 4:13 of the first half to turn a 30-19 advantage into a 47-24 lead, capped by a three point field goal by Mary Cook (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg Salem) who had 17 points for the Bobcats.
John Jay never got to within less than 19 points of the lead in the second half as Pitt-Greensburg held the Bloodhounds at arms length distance the rest of the way.
Up 73-49 with 5:44 to play the Bobcats went on a 13-0 run, which included eight fast-break points, to take an 86-49 advantage with 1:43 to go. Pitt-Greensburg outscored John Jay 34-4 on fast-break points and held a 50-16 advantage on points in the paint.
The Bloodhounds were led by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) with 20 points. Ganimete Ukperaj (Bellmore, NY / Bellmore) added 17 for John Jay. Tina Ogunleye (Central Islip, NY / Central Islip) added eight points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as the Bloodhounds out rebounded Pitt-Greensburg 40-34. Zadoora Carson (New York, NY / Urban Peace Academy) grabbed nine boards for the Bloodhounds.
Amanda Sheaffer (Pittsburgh, PA / Keystone Oaks) had a team-high 18 points for Pitt-Greensburg to go along with six steals to lead five Bobcats in double-figures.
Pitt-Greensburg shot 59 percent (34-for-58) from the floor in the contest, including 73 percent (19-for-26) in the first half.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Jan. 3 at CCNY at 5 p.m. Pitt-Greensburg will play at New York City Tech on Sat. Dec. 29 at noon.
