New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team lost a close one to Hunter College on the road as they lost to the Hawks 54-51 at Hunter College on Friday as the Bloodhounds are now 1-8 on the season.
The Bloodhounds were paced by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) with a game-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and five steals, while Parker Griffin (New York, NY / Bishop Kearney) added 10 points. Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY / Central Islip) grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench for John Jay.
The Bloodhounds raced out to a 7-2 lead early in the contest to take control of the game.
John Jay led by as much as 11 in the first half, and they took a 27-16 lead at the 4:01 mark on a Grice continuation three point play. John Jay went into halftime up 31-23.
Hunter opened the second half on an 11-2 run to take a 34-33 lead at the 15:46 mark.
Both teams traded leads six consecutive times over the next several minutes, but John Jay used a mini 4-0 run to take a three point lead (43-40) on a jumper by Griffin at the 8:54 mark.
But Hunter went on a 10-2 run to take a 50-45 lead at the 5:07 mark. John Jay then used a 6-0 run to go back in front. Another Griffin jumper gave the Bloodhounds a one point lead at the 3:14 mark.
But a three pointer by Hunter with 2:39 to play gave Hunter the lead and it was the last field goal the game would see.
John Jay went 0-for-7 from the field over the final 2:39 and John Jay would not score again as Hunter held on for the win.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Dec. 12 at New Jersey City Univ. at 6 p.m.
