New York, N.Y.— Sha-kia Hart (Brooklyn, NY/ Graham School) recorded a game-high 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Lashannen Hogue (Yonkers, NY/ Roosevelt) added 16 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists as the Bloodhounds defeated Hunter College 65-57 on Wednesday evening at the Doghouse.
The win improves John Jay to 16-8 (9-3 CUNYAC), while Hunter is now 12-11 (8-4 CUNYAC).
John Jay outrebounded Hunter by a 44-29 margin in the contest, including 15-5 on the offensive end, leading to nine second chance points to Hunter’s zero.
Both teams went back and forth for most of the first half. Hunter would grab a 5-0 lead to start the game to match their biggest lead of the game.
The Bloodhounds though took the lead for good at the 4:25 mark of the first half on a lay-up by Hart, which sparked a 9-2 John Jay run that gave the Bloodhounds a 32-26 lead with eight seconds remaining in the half. Hunter would score a last second field goal as John Jay went into in the intermission with a 32-28 lead.
John Jay picked up where they left off in the second half, coming out of the gate on a 10-0 run (19-2 total run) to take a 42-28 lead capped by a Hogue lay-up at the 16:41 mark.
But the Hawks would crawl back into the contest, and with John Jay still up by 14 (46-32 with 13:11 to play), Hunter went on a 10-1 run to cut the margin to five (47-42) at the 9:08 mark on a jumper by Andrea Buckham (Queens, NY/ Flushing), who led Hunter with 17 points and five steals.
John Jay would increase their lead again and go back up by as much as nine. But Hunter made a final surge and narrowed the deficit to three on two occasions (55-52 with 2:04 to play and 60-57 with 43 seconds remaining).
But Hunter would get no closer as Michelle Wallace (Flushing, NY/ Robert F Kennedy) recorded the final two of John Jay’s nine second chance points on a put back with 19 seconds remaining, and the Bloodhounds went on for a eight point victory to sweep the season series against Hunter.
The Bloodhounds were 6-for-15 from three point range, including 3-for-3 by Hart and 3-for-5 by Janise Higgins (Cambria Heights, NY/ Christ the King).
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Feb. 9 against the College of Staten Island for their 2006-07 regular season finale, 5 p.m. at the Doghouse.
