Brooklyn, N.Y.—Kenny Sepulveda (Valley Stream, NY/ Valley Stream Central) went 3-for-5 on the afternoon with a double, a run scored, and four runs batted in. But his final three RBIs of the afternoon proved to be the difference maker as he ripped a bases loaded double to left field in the bottom of the eighth to give the Bloodhounds a 6-3 lead as John Jay defeated Manhattanville College 6-5 at Legion Field on Tuesday afternoon.
John Jay improved their record to 6-5 with the win, while Manahttanville is now 6-6.
Trailing through most of the late innings of the contest, the Bloodhounds took full advantage of several Manhattanville errors in the eighth inning to explode for a four run frame to flip a 3-2 deficit and turn it into a 6-3 lead.
James DeCesare (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) got the inning started after striking out. He struck out swinging at a wild pitch in the dirt, but Manhattanville catcher
Nick Parente’s (New Rochelle, NY/ Archbishop Stepinac) toss to first base sailed over the first baseman’s head putting DeCesare on second to start the inning.
DeCesare then moved to third when
Henry Chao (Woodside, NY/ Bryant) reached first on a sacrifice bunt attempt that turned into a single after Manhattanville failed to make the play. Then with one out
Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph) reached on a fielders choice to shortstop, but shortstop
Thomas Verrengia’s (Staten Island, NY/ St. Joseph’s By the Sea) throw to the plate sailed to the backstop allowing DeCesare to score safely.
Then with two outs
Tim Murphy (Yorktown Heights, NY/ Yorktown) was hit by the pitch to load the bases for Sepulveda’s double that gave the Bloodhounds the three run advantage.
John Jay out hit the Valiants 9-6 and got a multiple hit game from Sepulveda as well as
John DeCrescenzo (Brooklyn, NY/ Telecommunications) who was 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter’s Boys) started on the mound and pitched five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, and struck out one batter. He picked up a no decision as
Marcos Almonzar (Brooklyn, NY/ Telecommunications) pitched four innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and struck out four, including the first three batters he faced after coming into pitch the sixth inning with a runner on second.
The Bloodhounds are now on a five-game winning streak and are over .500 for the first time this season. They will return to action on Thu. Mar. 29 against the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Legion Field at 3:30 p.m.
