Bloodhounds up Winning Streak to Eight with Doubleheader Sweep over Lehman

Bronx, N.Y.--The John Jay baseball team improved to 9-5 (5-0 CUNYAC) on the season on Saturday as the Bloodhounds swept Lehman College in a doubleheader. They won the first game 12-7 and defeated Lightning 13-5 to up their win streak to eight games.
 
The host Lightning got first run on the Bloodhounds scoring a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
 
But John Jay got a seven run inning in the top of the third to take the lead for good.
 
The Bloodhounds started their scoring barrage when Gonzalo Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY/ FDR) reached on an error and went to second to lead off the inning. Next Tim Murphy (Yorktown Heights, NY/ Yorktown) ripped a single to advance the runner to third. After Murphy stole second, Kenny Sepulveda (Valley Stream, NY/ Valley Stream Central) cleared the bases with a two-run single to give John Jay a 2-1 lead.
 
That gave the Bloodhounds the lead for good, but the Bloodhounds were not done as they recorded five more runs in the inning. Gonzalez, batting for the second time in the inning, ripped a bases clearing triple to score Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph), Henry Chao (Woodside, NY/ Bryant), and Joe Ayala (Bronx, NY/ St. Raymond’s) to cap the big inning.
 
The Bloodhounds got two more runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 12-2 lead at that point.
 
However Lehman mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh to put a dent into the Bloodhound lead.
 
John Jay starting pitcher John Dobkowski (Brooklyn, NY/ Grover Cleveland) cruised through the first six innings allowing only two runs on four hits.
 
But Lehman’s first four batters in the seventh inning opened up with back-to-back doubles, a walk, and a home run for four quick runs to pull to within 12-6.
 
Manny Rodriguez (Manhattan, NY/ Manchester) recorded the final three outs to preserve the win. He allowed an unearned run after entering but not enough as John Jay scored the win.
 
The Bloodhounds out hit Lehman 12-9 and got multiple hit games out of Sepulveda who was 2-for-3 with two runs and three runs batted in, as well as James DeCesare (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) who was 2-for-5 with three runs batted in. Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two runs and three runs batted in, while Murphy was 2-for-4 with a run. John DeCrescenzo (Brooklyn, NY/ Telecommunications) blasted a home run in the top of the seventh, his second of the season, a three run shot.
 
In the second game the Bloodhounds got five runs in the first, a run in the second, then two runs a piece in the third and fourth innings, and one more in the fifth to take an 11-0 lead.
 
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter’s Boys) was 4-for-5 in the contest. He scored three times and drove in three runs, and was a homerun shy of the cycle.
 
Fellow teammate DeCesare went 2-for-5 with three runs and two runs batted in, while DeCrescenzo and Gonzalez both went 2-for-4 in the win.
 
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY/ New Dorp) pitched six innings, and allowed nine hits, five runs (three earned), and struck out three in the win. Marcos Almonzar (Brooklyn, NY/ Telecommunications) pitched one inning in relief and struck out three batters to end the game.
 
John Jay will be back in action on Sun. Apr. 1 for a single game with Lehman College, 12 p.m. at Legion Field.
