Madison, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team fell hard on Tuesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated at Drew University 10-2 in a non-conference game. John Jay now stands at 10-9 on the season.
Neither team gave an inch, and the game was tied 0-0 going into the top of the fourth inning. But the Bloodhounds drew first blood getting a run in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Johan Abad (Brooklyn, NY/ Flushing) to drive in Joe Ayala (Bronx, NY/ St. Raymond’s).
But Drew would pull even in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own. Then in the fifth inning the host Rangers added two more runs, which proved to be enough. Drew took a 3-1 lead at that point before added two more runs in the sixth, four in the seventh, and one in the eighth.
John Jay would get one run in that span on a sacrifice fly by Henry Chao (Woodside, NY/ Bryant) that drove his former high school teammate John Polzotto (Auburndale, NY/ Bryant) in the seventh.
But that would be the extent of the Bloodhound scoring as John Jay was out hit 18-9 in the game. John Jay got two hits from Abad, as well as Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph) and James DeCesare (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) in the contest. Santana was the only Bloodhound to account for an extra base hit when he ripped a one out double in the third inning.
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY/ New Dorp) picked up the loss. He pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 17 hits, while striking out four.
John Jay will be back in action on Wed. Apr. 11 for a non conference affair against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) leader Ramapo College, 3:30 p.m. at American Legion Field.
