Baseball Downed by 25th Ranked Ramapo College

Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team fell to 10-10 on the season on Wednesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds fell at home to Ramapo College, ranked 25th in the nation, 22-7 at American Legion Field. With the win Ramapo, first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) now improves to 21-5.
 
The visiting Roadrunners jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the second on a two run double by  Aaron Drury (Canton, MI/ North Farmington) that scored  John Callandrello (Montville, NJ/ Seton Hall Prep) and Skyler Conte (Kinnelon, NJ/ Kinnelon).
 
Ramapo got four more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead at that point.
 
But John Jay did not go away and quickly penetrated into the lead with six runs of the own in the bottom of the fourth to pull to within one run (6-5) The Bloodhounds got RBI hits by Joe Ayala (Bronx, NY/ St. Raymond’s), Johan Abad (Brooklyn, NY/ Flushing), Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph), Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus), and Gonzolo Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY/ FDR).
 
John Jay would tie the game in the next inning as Henry Chao (Woodside, NY/ Bryant) trotted home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Gonzalez.
 
But the Roadrunners reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth inning with two more runs that gave Ramapo the lead for good on another two run single by Drury. For the game Drury went 3-for-6 with a run and five runs batted in.
 
Ramapo tacked on two more runs in the seventh on a two run homer to straightaway center field off the bat of Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ/ Union) to cap off a tremendous afternoon. Cacchiola went 6-for-6 at the plate and batted for the cycle with two singles, a double, two triples, and a home run. He also drove in four runs and scored four times.
 
The visiting team then sealed the game off with a 10 run frame in the top of the ninth inning to put the game out of reach. Ramapo batted around the order and the knock out blow was a grand slam homerun by Ryan Hanrahan (West Keansburg, NJ/ Raritan).
 
Both teams combined for 38 hits. John Jay got two hits a piece from Cestaro, Ayala, Abad, and James DeCesare (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) In the loss.
 
John Jay will return to action on Fri. Apr. 13 at Yeshiva University at 10 a.m. Ramapo will be back in action tomorrow for a game with Rutgers-Newark at 3:30 p.m.
