Camden, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team fell on the road on Tuesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Rutgers-Camden 17-8. John Jay is now 13-12 on the season.
The Bloodhounds recorded 12 hits in the contest and got two hits a piece from James DeCesare (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic), Joe Ayala (Bronx, NY/ St. Raymond’s), John Massoni (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter’s Boys), Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph), and Gonzolo Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY/ FDR) in the loss.
The host Scarlet-Raptors scored two runs in the first and two more in the second to take a 4-1 lead after the first two innings. The Bloodhounds lone run early came in the top of the second on an RBI single by Gonzalez to drive in Massoni who led off the inning by being hit by the pitch,
The Bloodhounds then scored seven unanswered runs over the next two innings, including a six run frame in the top of the third to take a 7-4 lead at that point capped by a two run single by Kenny Sepulveda (Valley Stream, NY/ Valley Stream Central) to drive in Santana and John DeCrescenzo (Brooklyn, NY/ Telecommunications).
John Jay then added another run in the top of the fourth as Gonzalez walked with the bases loaded to force in Ayala.
But that would be all the Bloodhounds would score as Rutgers-Camden scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull to within 8-7. The Scarlet-Raptors then took the lead for good with a seven run inning in the bottom of the fifth. Rutgers-Camden took a 14-8 lead at that point and it proved to be a lead they would not relinquish.
Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY/ New Dorp) picked up the loss in relief. He pitched 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs on six hits while striking out one.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Apr. 26 for a single game at the College of Mt. St. Vincent’s at 3:30 p.m.
