Bloodhounds Secure Playoff Spot, Cross Bridges 3-1

New York, N.Y.— Erica Esposito (Dix Hills, NY/ Half Hollow Hills) went the distance allowing one run (unearned) while scattering three hits and striking out four as the John Jay softball team defeated Brooklyn College 3-1 at East River Park on Wednesday afternoon. The win was John Jay’s ninth of the season as they close out the regular season with a 9-19 (4-8 CUNYAC) record.
 
With the win the Bloodhounds have secured a spot into the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) softball tournament play-in game next Wednesday where they will face Lehman College.
 
In today’s game the Bloodhounds took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the first inning. A groundout by Pamela Peralta (Bronx, NY/ John F Kennedy) drove in Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter’s Girls) for the first run of the game.
 
John Jay extended the lead to 3-0 after picking up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Taking advantage of Brooklyn fielding blunders John Jay picked up a pair of unearned runs. With runners on second and third with two outs, Bonici, who was 0-for-4 but reached base three times after reaching on three errors, reached on a fielding error by the Brooklyn shortstop, then advanced on a muffed throw by the shortstop which allowed Diana Lopez (Richmond Hill, NY/ Richmond Hill) and Dayna Navatta (Queens, NY/ Bayside) to score.
 
The Bridges salvaged a run in the top of the sixth, an unearned score, to cut the deficit to 3-1. Brooklyn had two runners on with the potential go ahead run on base but could do no further damage.
 
Esposito did walk a batter in the seventh but Brooklyn failed to get any runs across as the Bloodhounds end the regular season with a three game winning streak.
 
The Bloodhounds recorded five hits including two from Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY/ DeWitt Clinton) and one a piece from Lopez, Esposito, and Jennifer Marano (Freeport, NY/ Our Lady of Mercy).
