Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team split two games on Sunday as the Bloodhounds lost game one of a conference doubleheader to the College of Staten Island 10-2 before coming back to win the second game 7-3. The Bloodhounds are now 15-13 (9-2 CUNYAC) on the season.
In the opener contest the Bloodhounds were down 4-2 heading into the sixth inning but the host Dolphins recorded six runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 10-2 advantage as Staten Island held on for the win.
John Jay did draw first blood in the contest with a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by Gonzolo Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY/ FDR) drove in Kenny Sepulveda (Valley Stream, NY/ Valley Stream Central) for the first run of the game.
The Dolphins however got the run back in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one.
Staten Island then recorded two more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 advantage and it also would give the home team the lead for good.
The Bloodhounds would draw to within one run in the top of the fourth with another one run inning. A double to right center by Sepulveda drove in
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter’s Boys) who led off the inning with a hit.
With a runner on second and nobody out the Bloodhounds failed to get another run across.
John Dobkowski (Brooklyn, NY/ Grover Cleveland) picked up the loss for the Bloodhounds. He pitched 5.2 innings, and allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits and struck out four.
In the second game the Bloodhounds spotted the Dolphins a 3-0 lead after the first two innings before picking up the come from behind win.
John Jay got a run in the top of the fourth when Sepulveda crossed home plate on a fielder’s choice RBI by
Johan Abad (Brooklyn, NY/ Flushing). The Bloodhounds would tie the game in the next inning with two more runs. An RBI single by
James DeCesare (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) drove in Gonzalez. Then moments later DeCesare would come around and score when Massoni reached on an error by the Dolphins’ second baseman.
The game remained tied going into the seventh inning when the Bloodhounds exploded for four runs to take a 7-3 lead en route to victory.
The first four runners in the inning reached base and scored. The winning blow was a two run single by Massoni that drove in
Henry Chao (Woodside, NY/ Bryant) and DeCesare.
John Jay added two insurance runs shortly thereafter as Sepulveda scored on another error by the Staten Island second baseman, then Massoni came around on an RBI single by Joe Ayala (Bronx, NY/ St. Raymond’s).

Michael Colletta (New Dorp) went the distance allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six to pick up the win.
The Bloodhounds recorded 12 hits in the game and got three hits from Massoni, and received two a piece from Chao, DeCesare, and
Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph). Massoni also knocked in three runs in the contest and scored once.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Apr. 30 at Yeshiva Univ. 3:30 p.m. at Legion Field.
