Baseball Suffers Humbling Defeat in 24-3 Loss at Rutgers-Newark

Newark, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team got off to a great start initially. Senior second baseman, and 2006 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Year, James DeCesare (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) popped a homerun over the leftfield fence, a three run job in the top half of the first inning to give the Bloodhounds a 3-0 lead. Then the host Scarlet-Raiders went quietly in the bottom of the first. But that was as close as John Jay would get toward winning the contest as Rutgers-Newark University scored 24 unanswered runs over the remainder of the contest to defeat the Bloodhounds 24-3 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Monday afternoon.
 
The loss leaves John Jay at 10-8 on the season.
 
The host Scarlet-Raiders started their onslaught in the bottom of the second inning with an eight run frame to take an 8-3 lead after two innings. Rutgers-Newark recorded eight runs on seven hits in that inning.
 
Rutgers-Newark would increase the lead however with five more runs in the third inning. And after a scoreless fourth the Scarlet-Raiders got two more runs in the fifth and seven more in the sixth to take a 22-3 lead over John Jay after six innings. Rutgers-Newark, who has now scored 60 runs in the last three games, added one more run in the seventh and eighth innings respectively to give the Bloodhounds their biggest loss of the season.
 
The Bloodhounds recorded one error on the afternoon as all 24 of Rutgers-Newark’s runs were earned on the afternoon. Rutgers-Newark recorded 22 hits on the afternoon and were led by Brent DiMarco (Nutley, NJ/ Nutley) who was 4-for-6 on the afternoon with a double and two triples.
 
John Jay recorded five hits in the game and got a 2-for-4 three RBI effort out of DeCesare, whose homerun was the only runs John Jay had on the afternoon.
 
The Bloodhounds also got one hit a piece from outfielders Tim Murphy (Yorktown Heights, NY/ Yorktown), Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph), and reserve John Polzotto (Auburndale, NY/ Bryant).
 
Joe Ayala (Bronx, NY/ St. Raymond’s) started on the mound and picked up the loss. He went two complete innings and allowed eight runs on seven hits.
 
John Jay will return to action on Tue. Apr. 10 at Drew University at 4 p.m.
