Bloodhounds Outlast Staten Island in 38 Run, 41 Hit Contest

Brooklyn, N.Y.—  The John Jay and College of Staten Island baseball teams combined for 38 runs on 41 hits in the biggest slugfest of the season as the Bloodhounds outlasted the Dolphins 22-16 in a game played at Legion Field on Tuesday afternoon.
 
With the win John Jay is now 17-13 (11-2 CUNYAC) while the College of Staten Island is now 10-19 (6-9 CUNYAC).
 
Despite the barrage of scoring the Bloodhounds led from start to finish. They opened the game with 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 10-0 lead after one. All 10 runs recorded in the opening frame were earned and John Jay knocked Dolphin starting pitcher John Sullivan (Staten Island, NY/ Wagner) after 0.1 innings of work.
 
The Dolphins did not go away and chipped away at the lead. They scored two runs in the top of the second and four more in the top of the third to narrow the margin to 10-6.
 
But the Bloodhounds would reestablish a bigger lead by adding three runs over the next two innings to take a 13-6 lead.
 
CSI got a run back in the top of the fifth, but John Jay exploded for six more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take its biggest lead of the game (19-7).
 
The Dolphins would respond by scoring the next six runs of the game over three innings to narrow the margin to 19-13. But the Bloodhounds would score enough to keep the visiting Dolphins at an arms length distance and go on for the win.
 
Eight of John Jay’s 10 players who had a plate appearance had at least two hits, and all nine players in the starting lineup scored at least once.
 
Michael Cafagno (Bedford Hills, NY/ Family Foundation) went 4-for-5 on the afternoon with two runs and three runs batted in, while Kenny Sepulveda (Valley Stream, NY/ Valley Stream Central) was 3-for-5 with two runs and five runs batted in. John Jay also got a 3-for-5 performance out of John DeCrescenzo (Brooklyn, NY/ Telecommunications) who scored three times and drove in a run.
 
Gonzalo Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY/ FDR), who went 2-for-3, scored four times and drove in three runs. James DeCesare (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) also drove in three runs as did Henry Chao (Woodside, NY/ Bryant).
 
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter’s Boys) picked up the win in relief. He went 6.1 innings and allowed 10 runs (six earned) on 10 hits and struck out seven.
 
John Jay returns to action on Fri. May 4 for a doubleheader against Yeshiva Univ. 10 a.m. at Legion Field.
