Staten Island, N.Y.--No. 4 College of Staten Island used a powerful swing off the bat of Ray Valerio, to take down No. 1 John Jay College in the first game of the 2007 CUNYAC Baseball Championship Tournament, 2-1.  The Dolphins will move into the second day of the double-elimination tournament in the winners bracket, taking on No. 3 City College of New York. John Jay will face Mitchell College in the loser's bracket at 1 p.m. on Friday

CSI got on the board early and made the runs stand the entire way.  After John Jay starter Michael Colletta registered the first two outs of the game in order, CSI senior Bob Glennerster singled through the left side.  With Glennerster stationed at first base, Valerio stepped up next, and cracked a two-run homerun to left-centerfield, giving CSI the early 2-0 advantage.

The modest lead would be enough for CSI freshman knuckle-baller Daniel Gonzalez, who improved to 5-0 on the season by holding the Bloodhounds to a single run the entire way on nine hits while fanning a batter.  Along the way, Gonzalez worked through a jam in the second inning after yielding two hits with a single runner out.

John Jay struck in the seventh inning. Kenneth Sepulveda led off with a triple to right centerfield. The run then came home on a single by John DeCrescenzo in the next at-bat.  With nobody out, Gonzalez settled, however, and the frosh enduced a trio of lazy fly balls to end the scoring threat for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay did threaten in the ninth.  After registering the first out, Gonzalez issued a one out walk to Sepulveda, the only walk of the game. Then with two outs, Gonzalo Gonzalez ripped a single to right-center to move Sepulveda to third.  CSI's Gonzalez pulled through again getting the final out of the game on a routine flyball to centerfield.

John Jay left eight total runners on base. Michael Colletta allowed six hits over nine innings, fanning six and walking none.  Sepulveda finished 2-for-3 for the Bloodhounds with a walk, while CSI's Mohammad Hamad registered the only multi-hit game for the Dolphins, finishing 2-for-3.
