Tim Murphy went 5-for-6 with three runs, seven runs batted in, and was a homerun shy of the cycle as the John Jay baseball team defeated Mitchell College 15-7 in the loser’s bracket game of the 2007 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) baseball championship at the College of Staten Island Baseball Complex.
The Bloodhounds now advance into the second elimination game later today at 7 p.m. against the loser of the winner’s bracket game between CCNY and the College of Staten Island. The Peqouts have been eliminated from the tournament.
“It was a great win for us. Obviously it is what we needed if we want to win this tournament,” said John Jay head coach Dan Palumbo. “Today we played more like John Jay baseball. We hit and we capitalized. Hopefully we can take the momentum into tonight and advance to tomorrow”
Mitchell got the scoring started the same way CSI did against the Bloodhounds one day ago, via the long ball. Mitchell’s Seth Nowakowski belted a homerun to left field, a two run shot, in the top of the first to take a 2-0 advantage.
But the lead was erased for good in the bottom of the second as the Bloodhounds put up six runs in the frame and never looked back.
Johan Abad scored the Bloodhounds’ first run when he crossed home plate on an RBI single by Richard Santana. Moments later the Bloodhounds took the lead for good on a bases clearing double by Murphy that scored Santana and Gonzalo Gonzalez. Murphy then scored on an RBI single by Henry Chao to make the score 4-2. John Jay earned their fifth run with a double steal as Michael Cafagno stole home as Chao cruised into second. Chao advanced to third on the play after a throwing error by the Peqout catcher, then scored on a triple by James DeCesare.
John Jay would go on to score at least one run in each inning except for the seventh, and they out hit Mitchell College 16-10.
“I’m feeling pretty good right now,” said Murphy, who was reinserted into the starting lineup yesterday after missing the last 18 games with a hamstring injury. “The hamstring feels OK and I’m glad I was able to produce and help the team move on.”
John Dobkowski picked up the win after going 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, and striking out three. Jerry Chapman went 1.1 innings for the Peqouts and allowed six runs on six hits and suffered the loss.
Daniel Lanoue, Shawn Guiney, Seth Nowakowski, and Matt Chatell had two hits a piece for Mitchell.
Cafagno was 3-for-6 for John Jay, while Santana scored four times while going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
