Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay softball season came to an end on Friday as the Bloodhounds lost a pair of games in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) softball tournament. John Jay lost to the College of Staten Island (CSI), 9-3, before falling in the loser’s bracket to Baruch College, 9-1. John Jay finished the season 10-21 (4-8 CUNYAC) and earned fourth place in the conference.
In the first game the Bloodhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as
Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter’s Girls) scored after
Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY/ Bronx Leadership) reached base on a fielding error by the Dolphin first baseman.
But CSI quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first as the Dolphins’ leadoff batter Michelle Mazza (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) cracked a solo homerun to leftfield.
The Dolphins then took the lead for good in the second inning with a five run frame via the long ball. Mazza smashed her second homerun of the game, a three run shot to left to put CSI up 4-1. Two batters later CSI’s Christina D’Arpa (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) nailed a two run homer to give CSI a 6-1 advantage.
The Bloodhounds answered with a run in the top of the third with a four-hit inning.
Diana Lopez (Richmond Hill, NY/ Richmond Hill) laced a single to centerfield to drive in
Erica Esposito (Dix Hills, NY/ Half Hollow Hills) to make the score 6-2.
John Jay inched a little closer with another run in the top of the fourth as Bonici scored her second run of the game, coming via a base hit off the bat of
Pamela Peralta (Bronx, NY/ John F Kennedy).
But the Bloodhounds would get no closer, and the Dolphins added on a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead and go onto victory.
John Jay was out hit 11-9 and got two hits each from Bonici, Peralta, and Esposito.
In the loser’s bracket game Baruch’s first five batters scored in the bottom of the first to take a 5-0 lead and they never looked back as the Bloodhounds were defeated via the five inning mercy rule.
John Jay was held to two hits, both off the bat of Esposito. The Bloodhounds lone run came in the top of the third on an RBI double down the leftfield line by Esposito that scored Bonici, who led off the inning with a walk.
Baruch would get a run across in the third and three more in the fourth to take an eight run lead and advance in the tournament.
