Brooklyn, N.Y.---The John Jay baseball team is now one win away from clinching the top spot in the CUNYAC regular season for the second year in a row as the Bloodhounds took two games from Yeshiva University on Friday. John Jay won the first game 10-0 before taking the second game from the Maccabees 19-0 at American Legion Field.
In the first game the visiting Maccabees went toe to toe with John Jay as the Bloodhounds found themselves locked into a scoreless tie after three innings.
After Yeshiva went quietly in the top of the fourth the Bloodhounds scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game. The first seven batters to have a plate appearance in the inning scored safely.
John Jay pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to round out the scoring.
In the meanwhile the combination of
Steven Hernandez (North Bergan, NJ/ North Bergan),
Ross Garner (Smithtown, NY/ Oneonta), and
Manny Rodriguez (Manhattan, NY/ Manchester) combined on the shutout. Garner picked up the win in relief. He pitched three innings, allowed two hits, and struckout three.
Henry Chao (Woodside, NY/ Bryant) went 4-for-5 with a run and two runs batted in.
Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph) went 3-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in.
Gonzolo Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY/ FDR) went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while
Mike Cafagno (Port Chester, NY/ Family Foundation) was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
In the second game the Bloodhounds scored in each inning and were never threatened in the win. John Jay held Yeshiva to one hit in the game.
Marcos Almonzar (Brooklyn, NY/ Telecommunications) earned the win while pitching three innings of no-hit ball. He also struck out five batters in the contest. Rodriguez,
Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus), and
Joe Ayala (Bronx, NY/ St. Raymond’s) also saw action in the win.
The Bloodhounds were led by the freshman core of
Luis Guzman (Yonkers, NY/ Mt. St. Michael’s) and Cestaro as they were a combined 10-for-10. Guzman was 5-for-5 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI, while Cestaro was 5-for-5 with a double, two runs and four RBI.
The Bloodhounds recorded 19 hits in the contest.
