Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team quickly took care of business in their regular season finale on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds defeated Polytechnic University 20-0 at American Legion Field in a game that was called after five innings due to darkness. The win improves the Bloodhounds to 23-13 on the season as they head into the 2007 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) playoffs where they will be the No. 1 seed.
Neither team scored a run in the first inning. And after the visiting Blue Jays went silently in the top of the second the Bloodhounds took the game over. John Jay scored five runs in the second, nine in the third, and six in the fourth to take a 20 run lead, and it proved to be more than enough.
John Massoni (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter’s Boys) went 5-for-5 on the afternoon with two doubles, four runs, and five RBI. Fellow teammate Richard Santana (New York, NY/ A Phillip Randolph) went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and was a homerun shy of the cycle. He also contributed with two runs and three RBI.
Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit and each member of the starting lineup reached base at least once.
Marcos Almonzar (Brooklyn, NY/ Telecommunications) picked up the win in relief going 1.2 innings allowing one hit and striking out three.
