Ramapo, N.J. – The John Jay men’s soccer season has gotten off on the right foot as the Bloodhounds defeated Polytechnic, 3-0 in Day One of the President’s Cup Tournament at Ramapo College.

The Bloodhounds, now 1-0, got three goals in the second half with one each coming from Paul Navarro (Bogota, Colombia / San Viator), Oscar Garcia (East Elmhurst, NY / St. Francis Prep), and Christopher Tapia (Fresh Meadows, NY / Central Islip).

John Jay outshot the Blue Jays 23-1 in total shots and 12-1 in shots on goal. After a scoreless first half the Bloodhounds got on the board 4:25 into the second half on Garcia’s goal, the first of the freshman’s career. Joceny Therasias (St. Louis Du Nord, Haiti / Metropolitan) offered the assist. The goal proved to be more than enough as the Bloodhound defense disallowed Polytechnic a quality shot.

“The guys were a team out there today, everyone played great,” said head coach Stavros Zomopoulos.

Freshman goalkeeper Kemar Brown (Kingston, Jamaica / Van Buren), making his NCAA debut, did not make a save in the contest (Polytech’s lone shot on goal was saved by the team) and picked up his first career win in net.

John Jay recorded 17 corner kicks to their opponent’s one.

Garcia recorded a game-high five shots, while Hiromi Karahashi (Kanagawa, Japan / St. Johnsburg) had four shots. Sophomore Daniel Munoz (Peroria, Colombia / East Hampton) recorded an assist in the win.

John Jay returns to action on Sat. Sept. 1 at host Ramapo College for day two of the President’s Cup tournament.
