Queens, N.Y. – Hiromi Karahashi (Kanagawa, Japan / St. Johnsburg) ripped a golden goal in the 101st minute of play to seal the deal for the Bloodhounds as the John Jay men’s soccer team defeated Baruch College, 1-0, in overtime at the Metropolitan Oval on Wednesday evening, receiving a small amount of retribution for last season’s heartbreaking loss in the conference championship game.

The win improves John Jay to 3-3-0 (1-0-0 CUNYAC), while Baruch is now 0-6-0 (0-1-0 CUNYAC).

Karahashi, whose golden goal was the second of his career, capped off a Bloodhound momentum swing which started going in the Bloodhounds’ favor late in the first overtime.

The Bloodhounds had the ball in the Baruch end for the latter portion of the first extra session. And in the second overtime John Jay took just 57 seconds to get the ball past the Baruch goalkeeper Nelson DiBastiano (Rego Park, NY / St. Francis Prep), who made five saves for the Bearcats..

John Jay attacked from the opening whistle of the second overtime and had control deep in the Bearcat zone. After an initial shot was moved aside, Karahashi got a clean possession on the left side of the goal about 10 feet from the net and ripped the golden goal toward the right-hand side of the goal, sending John Jay to victory. Daniel Vargas (Corona, NY / Arts and Business) and Steve Castillo (Maspeth, NY / Forest Hills) recorded assists on the goal.

“The guys played very well. They really wanted to win this match,” said John Jay head coach Stavros Zomopoulos. “The fought to the end and never gave up, and I’m very satisfied with the win.”

The game was evenly played most of the way. The host Bearcats recorded 14 shots to John Jay’s nine. The Bloodhounds got two shots a piece from Karahashi, Jonathan Cedeno (Guayaquil, Ecuador / Long Island City), and Oscar Vargas (East Elmhurst, NY / St. Francis Prep).

And the Bloodhounds got three saves from goalkeeper Edwin Casas (Bogota, Colombia / South Side) for his first shutout of the season.

John Jay returns to action on Sat. Sept. 15 at the College of Staten Island at noon.
