Queens, N.Y. – The John Jay men’s soccer team let an early two goal lead slip away, but the Bloodhounds fought back and put home a goal in the 96th minute off the foot of Christopher Tapia (Fresh Meadows, NY / Central Islip) as the John Jay men’s soccer team defeated Brooklyn College 3-2 in overtime in a match at the Metropolitan Oval on Wednesday evening.

The win improves the Bloodhounds to 4-4-1 (2-0-1 CUNYAC) while Brooklyn is now 0-6-0 (0-3-0 CUNYAC).

“We got back into our game late and we wanted the win,” said Tapia. “We never gave up and worked hard until we picked up the win.”

The Bloodhounds dominated the contest in the early going. They took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half on a pair of goal by Oscar Garcia (East Elmhurst, NY / St. John’s Prep). Garcia recorded his first goal of the game in the 23rd minute on a header off a free kick from Tapia.

Then in the 34th minute John Jay executed a two goal advantage when Garcia hit the back of the mesh on a play that developed on the near sideline in the Brooklyn end. Garcia took a centering pass from just outside the penalty box from Steven Castillo (Maspeth, NY / Forest Hills) and nailed it home and giving the Bloodhounds a two goal cushion.

The Bridges however did not go away and cut the deficit in half moments later on a goal by Sedley Kinghorn (Brooklyn, NY / Canarsie) off a deflection in the 38th minute.

Midway through the second half Brooklyn knotted the contest on another a goal, this time by Vasilios Mantagas (Brooklyn, NY / James Madison) in the 62nd minute.

“Unfortunately my guys thought the match was over and reverted to individual play,” said John Jay head coach Stavros Zomopoulos.  “Brooklyn took advantage of us and we got a little careless.”

The Bloodhounds had their chances to crumble the Bridges but missed on capitalizing opportunities. With John Jay still up 2-1 in the 60th minute Tapia sent a breakaway shot from the right of the net and angled it wide lower 90.

The two would remain deadlocked for the next 28 minutes sending John Jay into its third consecutive overtime against a CUNYAC opponent.

In the extra session the Bloodhounds attacked in the Bridges’ zone. Reserve forward Joceny Theresias (St. Louis Du Nord, Haiti / Metropolitan) took a centering pass from Andres Llanos (Cuenca, Ecuador / Newtown) and stuffed it in front of the Brooklyn goalkeeper. After the initial shot was denied Tapia stuffed home the rebound and gave the Bloodhounds their second overtime win of the season.

John Jay out shot Brooklyn 13-11 in the contest, and Bloodhound goalkeeper Edwin Casas (Bogota, Colombia / South Side) made three saves in net.

John Jay will return to action on Mon. Sept. 24 at Mt. St. Vincent’s at 4 p.m.
