Queens, N.Y.— Hiromi Karahashi (Kangawa, Japan / St. Johnsburg) drilled a pair of goals, including the game winner early in the second half, to lift John Jay to another conference win as the Bloodhounds defeated the City College of New York (CCNY) 3-2 in a match at the Metropolitan Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The win improves the Bloodhounds’ record to 5-6-1 (3-0-1 CUNYAC), while CCNY is now 1-7-0 (1-2-0 CUNYAC).

Karahashi scored John Jay’s latter two goals of the contest in what was a goal-for-goal match up.

The Bloodhounds struck early in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in the third minute of play when Daniel Vargas (Corona, NY / Arts and Business) nailed a point blank shot from about 25 yards out that was deflected by a CCNY defender before making its way to the goal past the CCNY goalkeeper.

The play developed from an indirect kick from Jonathan Cedeno (Guayaquil, Ecuador / Long Island City) from just to the right of the goal.

John Jay maintained the lead for the next 20 minutes before the Beavers evened the contest. CCNY got on the board on a corner kick goal from Sebastian Ramirez (Brooklyn, NY / Midwood). The well placed kick landed in the hands of Bloodhound goalkeeper Edwin Casas (Bogota, Colombia / South Side) who came out of his post to catch the kick, but the ball slipped through his gloves and into the net as CCNY tied the match.

The Bloodhounds however reclaimed the lead in the 36th minute on the first of two goals by Karahashi. The play developed on a free kick by Christopher Tapia (Fresh Meadows, NY / Central Islip) which went through Steven Castillo (Maspeth, NY / Forest Hills) before Karahashi sent it to the back of the mesh.

The lead lasted less than four minutes however when CCNY’s Kehinde Alabi (Queens, NY / Nigeria) lifted one from 25 yards out that went through the upper middle portion of the goal just out of the reach of a leaping Casas. The goal scored the match at 2-2 and the score would remain that way into halftime.

With just under 12 minutes gone by in the second half the Bloodhounds got the equalizer they needed. Karahashi put home the eventual game winner from just in front of the net after a free kick by defenseman Raymond Sanicola (East Meadow, NY / St. Anthony’s) landed inside the penalty area. Teammate Oscar Garcia (East Elmhurst, NY / St. John’s Prep) got a foot on it before Karahashi cleaned up the crease area to give the Bloodhounds the lead and win.

John Jay out shot the Beavers 16-15 in the match, while Karahashi had three shots on net in the contest. Vargas had a game-high four shots, two of which were on goal.

Edwin Casas (Bogota, Colombia / South Side) made six saves for John Jay, who have sole possession of first place in CUNYAC with 10 points.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Oct. 3 for a match against second place York College in what will be a battle for first place (York is 3-0-0 in CUNYAC), 6 p.m. at the Metropolian Oval.
