New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team lost on Saturday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Lehman College, 62-42, at the Doghouse.
The visiting Lightning raced out of the gate opening the game on a 10-0 run and Lehman College led from start to finish.
After falling behind early the Bloodhounds went on an 8-1 run to narrow the deficit to three, capped off on a fast-break lay-up by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) with 11:57 to play. Grice recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds, and a team-high four assists. After momentarily falling behind by five the Bloodhounds got back to within three on another Grice lay-up with 10:14 on the clock.
But John Jay would get no closer as Lehman went on a 10-2 run to go up 22-12.
Up by seven (27-20) with just over four minutes to play, the Lightning closed out the half outscoring the Bloodhounds 10-2 to go into halftime up 37-22.
In the second half Lehman College maintained a double digit lead. The Lightning raced out on a 13-4 run to start the second half to take a 49-26 lead at the 13:20 mark capped by a fast-break lay-up by Sally Nnamani (Warwick, NY / Warwick) who led all scorers with 30 points.
The Lightning then kept the Bloodhounds at arm-length distance the rest of the way. John Jay got the lead to within 18 (58-40) at the 3:24 mark on a jumper by Parker Griffin (New York, NY / Bishop Kearney) who scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
But Lehman went back up by as much as 22 before the game ended.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 9 at Brooklyn College at 5 p.m.
