Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s soccer team lost another tough one on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Hunter College, 2-1, in overtime. The Bloodhounds’ streak in games decided by one goal or less against conference teams is now at 20 games and John Jay is 7-11-2 in those matches.
Hunter’s Mauro Ortiz drilled the back of the mesh at the 92:06 point in overtime to win it for the Hawks. Ortiz collected a rebound on the initial shot by Danny Vera who put a shot on net, but was denied by John Jay goalkeeper Chris Adao. But Ortiz cleaned up the mess with a header over the John Jay keeper to secure the win.
The Bloodhounds got the early advantage in the contest, scoring the first goal of the game on a goal by Henrique Avellar with 15:22 gone by. It was his fourth of the season.
But Hunter countered right back moments later and tied the contest on a goal by Oscar Dotti at the 28:04. Dotti ripped the shot from point blank range after receiving a centering pass from teammate Vera his first of two assists in the game.
Hunter College held an overwhelming advantage over the Bloodhounds, outshooting them 23-7 in the contest, including a 12-0 edge over the final 47:06. John Jay was held without attempting a shot in the second half and overtime as the Hunter maintained control in the John Jay zone for most of the second half.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Oct. 13 at Rutgers-Newark at 7 p.m.
