Maspeth, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s soccer team lost a tight match on Wednesday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the College of Staten Island, 3-2, at the Metropolitan Oval.
John Jay is now 3-10-0 (1-4-0 CUNYAC) this season, while the College of Staten Island is now 3-8-1 (3-2-0 CUNYAC).
John Jay started the match positively. They scored the first two goals of the game early in the first half to grab a two goal advantage. Hiromi Karahashi headed in a shot past the Dolphins goalkeeper, Pavel Bespalov, in the 13th minute for the first goal of the game.
The Bloodhounds then doubled its lead just over four minutes later when the speedy Daniel Munoz hit the back of the mesh with 16:28 gone by as John Jay was rolling along.
But CSI did not go away and cut its deficit in half just minutes later when Sam Musovic ripped a point blank shot into the net to make the score 2-1 as the teams went into halftime with that score.
John Jay appeared to hold an advantage in the first half in all facets. They out shot the Dolphins in the first half 7-2 and had the ball in the CSI zone for a big portion of the opening stanza.
But in the second half the Dolphins scored just enough times to take the one goal decision as John Jay has now either tied, won or lost each game against a conference opponent for the 19th consecutive time, a streak that dates back to the 2006 season. John Jay is now 7-10-2 in those games. The last time John Jay had a game against a CUNYAC opponent where the match was decided by more than one goal was a 5-0 loss to Hunter on Oct. 18, 2006.
The Dolphins tied the contest in the 79th minute on a strike by Jason Ribiero, his 12th of the season. Moments later Konstantinos Koulouris scored the game winner at 81:21 to win it for CSI.
Chris Adao made six saves in net for John Jay, while Bespalov had nine for CSI.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Oct. 11 for a home match against Hunter College at noon.
