John Jay Women’s Swimming Loses Home Opener to CSI

New York, N.Y.— Swimming in its 2008-09 home opener, the John Jay women’s swimming team was defeated, losing to conference rival the College of Staten Island (CSI), 56-36, on Friday evening.
 
With the loss, John Jay is now 0-2 (0-1 CUNYAC) on the season, while CSI is now 1-1 (1-0 CUNYAC).
 
The visiting Dolphins took the lead from the opening race as CSI won the 200 yard medley relay (2:16.09), the 1000 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle and 50 yard freestyle to grab a 26-7 advantage after four races.
 
The Bloodhounds picked up its first win of the evening in the 200 yard individual medley when Ashley Stewart blazed through the pool and pulled away in the final 100 yards to win by just under 20 seconds (2:52.85).
 
But CSI claimed first place in the next four races and led 56-21 with two races remaining.
 
John Jay picked up points in the final two races of the evening, the 100 yard breaststroke and 200 yard free relay, as CSI swam the final two events as exhibition.
 
But Stewart, in the 100 yard breaststroke won the race outright in the narrowest margin of victories on the evening, winning by .05 seconds (1.24.51).
 
John Jay then scored seven points by swimming in the 200 yard free relay (2:50.58).
 
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Nov. 11 at Hunter College at 6 p.m.
