Women's Basketball Falls at Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team lost its final road contest of the season as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the College of Staten Island (CSI), losing to the Dolphins 78-43 at CSI’s Sports Complex on Wednesday. John Jay, currently in ninth place in conference standings have been eliminated from playoff contention.
 
The Bloodhounds were led by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) with 13 points. She added six rebounds and four steals in the contest. Maxine Jenkins (Astoria, NY / Bishop Loughlin) scored nine points and grabbed six boards, while Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY / Central Islip) had a team-high 10 rebounds for the Bloodhounds.
 
The host Dolphins raced to an early lead and led from start to finish. CSI opened the game on a 10-2 run to take an eight point lead less than five minutes into the game. CSI gradually increased the lead and led by as much as twenty in the first half.
 
CSI owned an 18 point lead at halftime (37-19).
 
In the second half the Dolphins opened up with an 11-2 run to take a 48-21 lead with 17:46 to play.
 
The Bloodhounds established a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 22 (48-26) with 15:25 to go on a lay-up by Grice.
 
But CSI used an 11-0 spurt to take a 57-26 lead to put the game out of reach.
 
The Bloodhounds gathered some momentum however, and used a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 57-36 with 8:14 to go. Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY / Newtown) buried a three point field goal to cap the run.
 
But it was as close as the Bloodhounds would get. CSI pulled away again and up by 25 (68-43) with 2:54 to play, they closed out the game with a 10-0 run to take its biggest lead of the night before the final buzzer.
 
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Feb. 9 for a home contest against Hunter College at noon.
