Old Westbury, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team are on their first winning streak of the season and improved to 2-7 as the Bloodhounds defeated SUNY Old Westbury, 8-6, at Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The host Panthers took an initial lead, and were ahead 1-0 after one inning. With SUNY Old Westbury still holding on to the lead the Bloodhounds got two unearned runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.

John Massoni (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s Boys) reached on an error by the Panthers’ second baseman allowing Edwin Hernandez (Brooklyn, NY/Murry Bergtraum) and Jorge Rosado (Santo Domingo, DR/Martin Luther King) to score on the play.

The two runs gave John Jay a lead they would not lose. But good eyes by the Bloodhounds in the fourth inning allowed five more runs to cross the plate as John Jay took a commanding 7-1 lead.

John Jay got five straight base runners to start the inning, three coming via walks and two hit batsmen. A double by Hernandez scored Steven Roman (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) and Albert Cepeda (Bronx, NY/Graphic Arts) to cap the inning, and it was the only hit of the inning for John Jay, despite 10 batters coming to the plate. The Bloodhounds got five runs on one hit in the inning.

In the meanwhile Michael Colletta (Staten Island, NY/New Dorp) coasted along and allowed two earned runs and scattered seven hits en route to earning his first win of the season.

Enmanuel Rodriguez (Manhattan, NY/Manchester) pitched a scoreless ninth and earned his first save of the season.
